Seed Implants Now Being Offered
Memorial Hospital has begun offering radioactive seed implants for those suffering from prostate cancer. With the arrival of Dr. Nigel Goodchild, our new Radiation Oncologist, plans were implemented to be able to offer this service to our patients. Done in conjunction with the Urologist, Physicist and Radiation Oncologist, radioactive seeds are implanted into the prostate. The hospital purchased the ?Spot Pro? Needle Navigator which is one of the most up-to-date state-of-the-art seed implementation systems available. This machine gives the physicians the capability to do live 3D planning right in the operating room meaning adjustments can be made as needed making it extremely accurate. Linked seeds, which are about the size of a grain of rice, are then injected into the patient?s prostate. The number of seeds will depend on the size of the cancer. This procedure is done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. There is minimal discomfort after the procedure and most men are able to return to work after a week. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death in men, however, if caught in the early stages, the five year survival rate is extremely good. MEN, remember to have your screenings and see your doctor if you are experiencing any symptoms.

Renovation Project
Memorial Hospital continues to grow and improve our health care services to meet the changing needs of our community. We recently completed an expansive renovation project to update our existing hospital plan. The project was designed to separate inpatient and outpatient services, to improve the flow of people in the hospital, and to provide more convenient, efficient services to our patients. The new front lobby, completed in March 2000, serves all inpatients and outpatients, while Physical Rehabilitation, the Cancer Center, Breast Care Center, and Emergency Room each have dedicated entrances. A dedicated outpatient elevator and stairway takes patients to the newly renovated outpatient services registration and waiting area, located on the second floor. Newly renovated Ambulatory Surgery, Elective Procedure Services, Laboratory, Radiology, and Cardiopulmonary Neurophysiology Services will fan out from the registration area. Future projects include the renovatation of the third, fourth, and fifth inpatient floors.
