Memorial Hospital is located in Martinsville, Virginia.  Nestled at the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, the area attracts locals and visitors alike to spend a week, a month, or even a lifetime discovering and exploring our trout-filled rivers, generous lakes, and gracious mountains.  Martinsville-Henry County is home to a variety of recreational, cultural and historical sites. The area is also conveniently close to several larger economic areas such as Greensboro, North Carolina, and Roanoke, Virginia. 

 

Aside from our beautiful location, rich history, and diversified economy, the true key to our community is our people.  In Martinsville-Henry County you, too, will find that warm and friendly people seem to be our strongest asset. 

 

Education.  Martinsville-Henry County is an area where families can grow unencumbered by chaos and insecurity.  Ample public and private schools provide sound educational support from primary through higher education.  With hundreds of dedicated teachers, we offer outstanding educational opportunities to our elementary and secondary school students.  Our high school graduates are attending such outstanding universities as the College of William and Mary, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

 

Also located in Martinsville-Henry County, Patrick Henry Community College is fully accredited and offers a two-year program for those seeking a bachelor's degree or an associate degree as well as occupational/technical programs for those seeking employment. PHCC provides access to bachelor's and master's degrees from Old Dominion University through Teletechnet.

 

Recreation.  Recreational opportunities offer extensive youth and adult athletic programs from soccer to swimming and camping to baseball.

 

Philpott Lake offers excellent sporting activities for the entire family and boasts an undeveloped shoreline.

Smith Mountain Lake, 500 miles of shoreline, offers all water activities, lodging, fishing and big boating sports.

Fairy Stone State Park offers 4,750 acres of picnicking, swimming, boating, fishing and hiking.  Tent sites, recreational vehicle hookups, and cabins or camping lodges make overnight stays a pleasant experience for the entire family.

 

The Smith River offers some of the best Native Brown Trout fishing in the state.  Truly a fisherman's paradise. The river runs from northern Henry County through Fairy Stone State Park and Philpott Lake.

 

The Blue Ridge Parkway, ranked "America's most scenic drive" by leading travel writers, offers 469 toll-free miles of awesome natural beauty with pioneer history.  It is located 45 minutes west of Martinsville.

 

Area golf courses provide any handicapper a great challenge amidst gorgeous settings.  The area has four private golf clbs, as well as two public courses.  In addition to golf and tennis, a variety of fishing and hunting opportunities are widely available. 

 

Martinsville Speedway hosts two Winston Cup races each year.  Additionally, Martinsville is home to the 1999 Appalachian League Champion Martinsville Astros, a rookie league affiliate of the Houston Astros.  

 

Built in 1990, the Martinsville YMCA features an Olympic-size pool, basketball and racquetball courts, walking track, Nautilus equipment and a weight room. It offers a variety of classes for the entire family.

 

The Virginia Museum of Natural History displays dinosaurs, Virginia animals, fossils, archeology, rocks and shell life.  The museum sponsors two annual festivals.

 

The Piedmont Arts Association, a distinguishing feature of the Martinsville-Henry County area, offers fine arts, exhibits, performing arts and educational opportunities.  In addition, they sponsor many cultural events.
